How to Encourage Alzheimer’s Patients to be Active

how-to-encourage-alzheimers-patients-to-be-active

People with Alzheimer’s disease often experience memory loss problems accompanied by confusion and unfamiliarity with their surroundings. Because of these feelings, it is hard for them to engage in activities or finish tasks. However, being physically inactive can increase their risk of having further health complications. This is why seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease are highly encouraged to be as physically active as their mobility allows.

As a provider of homecare services in Highland, Indiana, we want to share with you the following activities suggested by the National Institute on Aging:

  • Household chores
An exercise regime is not necessarily needed to keep seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia active. Assisting them in doing simple household chores like sweeping, dusting, folding laundry, and sorting the mail can already be considered physical activity.
  • Exercise
Walking regularly for at least 30 minutes has been proven beneficial to seniors’ health. A walk around the neighborhood can be a form of exercise. Mobility assistance services offered by a provider of senior care in Indiana can keep your senior loved ones safe as they perform their exercise.
  • Gardening
Gardening is a great activity for people with Alzheimer’s. It allows them to be productive and active during the day. Being around plants and nature also has wondrous effects on our mental health.
